This all got started not too long ago when I wanted to make a special Christmas present for my daughter. I didn’t know much about woodworking and hadn’t built anything since Woodshop class in middle school, fortunately my friend has been doing this type of thing for twenty or so years. No one ever taught me how to work with my hands and I wanted to have something that I could one day teach my daughter. So we built our special Christmas presents and I was very happy with the way they came out, I was hooked. Since then I’ve been amassing woodworking tools as well as a good deal of experience, working on projects for friends and family, finding suppliers of specialized tools and beautiful local lumber. Recently we’ve been bouncing around the idea that this might be something that we would like to do as more than just a hobby and so we decided to start our own woodworking business. Welcome to Burning Oaks Woodworking and thank you for visiting our website!
We see beauty in the natural grain patterns of high quality wood, the organic flow of live edge lumber, and the random knots and gnarls in character grade boards. Sometimes doing as little as possible to highlight that is the right thing to do. At the same time we look forward to working on more projects combining wood with unlike materials as an accent such as stone, metal, leather. We use epoxy to stabilize, fill, and add dramatic color to lumber that other woodworkers might not even consider using. We also enjoy Shou Sugi Ban (Yakisugi), a centuries old Japanese wood preservation technique that involves burning and oiling the wood and creates a beautiful embossing effect, deepening and burnishing the grain. Also it’s really fun to play with a flame thrower.
We create pieces that you can enjoy for years to come. We can’t help but notice that things are being cheaply made more and more often, everything falls apart within a year or two, and sadly we seem to have grown to accept this. The idea of buying something special that you can pass down to your kids seems to be slowly fading away into piles of disposable trash, stapled and super glued together just well enough that you can get it home before it crumbles to pieces. But unlike the big box stores ordering their mass produced junk from China, we handcraft each and every piece that leaves our shop. We stand behind the quality of our work and we actually care if you’re unhappy with your purchase, if you wouldn’t give us a five star review let us know why and we will do everything in our power to make it right.
