Burning Oaks Woodworking Whiskey Smokers

A whiskey smoker is an essential tool for infusing your drink with a delicious smokey flavor. While whiskey is currently the most popular spirit for this technique, you can use it on any liquor to create unique smoked drinks. Pro Tip: try smoking your vodka for a fantastic addition to a Bloody Mary 👍. Using our whiskey smoker is pretty straightforward, as demonstrated in the video; just pour your spirit, place the smoker on your glass, add a pinch or two of shavings, and use a butane lighter or brûlée torch to ignite the shavings. No glass dome or extra junk, no electric thing to plug in, you just light the damn thing on fire. You'll soon see the smoke swirling down into your drink—the more smoke you add and the longer you let it infuse, the smokier your drink will become.

Our whiskey smokers are crafted from premium White Oak, chosen because whiskey is traditionally aged in White Oak barrels. We double down on the Oak and use our own White Oak shavings to smoke your drink. Our kits also come with generous bags of Cherry, Hickory, and Maple shavings to give you something different to try.

Let's Give You A Few Recipes To Try Out

First, some smoker basics. The more smoke you add to your drink, the longer you leave it in contact with your drink, the smokier your drink will become. Alcohol is an excellent solvent and it really absorbs smoke very well, water, not so much. if you're doing a drink like an Old Fashioned which is mostly alcohol you don't even need to think about this. But if your drink is loaded with water based mixers this is important. It's also important if there is little to no space left in your glass. If there is no room for smoke in the glass then you wont have a smoky drink. In these types of situations consider smoking your alcohol before you mix your drink, if you're making a Bloody Mary consider smoking your vodka first, and because there will be a lot of mixer in that drink, consider smoking it more heavily than you otherwise might so the smoke doesn't get drowned out by the other ingredients. Lastly, have fun with it, I include plenty of shavings to play around with and this Whiskey Smoker is intended to be easy to use, there is little to no prep and little cleanup. we've run into so many people who tell me they never use their smokers, especially when they're using the type that include a dome or a box or an electric pump, its a lot to deal with especially if you're just making a drink for yourself. This thing is easy and fast to use, it takes literally a minute or two and all you have to do is tap the burned shavings out afterwards (into something that will not catch your house on fire btw). These things are cool and impressive to use when you've got company over but we've made them simple enough to use when you're just making yourself a drink.

Smoked Old Fashioned

2oz Bourbon (or Rye) of your choice

1/4oz Simple Syrup

2-3 Dashes Angostura Bitters

Orange Peel and/or Luxardo Cherry for Garnish

Add your Bourbon (or rye), Simple Syrup, and Bitters to your glass. Set your smoker on top of your glass, fill the shavings cup with the shavings of your choice, and light them with your butane torch. The force of the flame exiting the torch is what sends the smoke into your glass, so keep hitting it till you reach the desired amount of smoke. Allow it to sit for a bit, I like to give it 30 seconds to a minute, the more smoke you pump into the glass, the longer you let it sit, the smokier your drink will be. Remove the smoker, add your ice and stir till cold, and twist your orange peel (optional) over your drink, spritzing it's oils into your beverage. Enjoy!

So, there are as many ways to make an Old Fashioned as there are to skin a cat. Are there many ways to skin a cat? Hmmmm. Anyhow, this is a basic recipe, like it a little sweeter, add some more syrup, wanna switch to a different bitter? go right ahead. Purists will insist that you use a sugar cube, but that thing never dissolves all the way, you can save yourself the trouble and use simple syrup instead. Make the drink that you like, the experimenting is the fun part. You wanna start down the Old Fashioned rabbithole?
